Christmas halos

Once again, going out to the grocery store without the camera. The sundogs were spectacular, extremely bright and huge. Later a nice CZA and sun pillar.
Frames below were shot later when display already lost its brightness.

Jälle sama lugu, läksin poodi ja jätsin kaamera koju. Päikesekoerad olid silmipimestavad ja suured. Hiljem oli mõnda aega nähtav ka seniidikaar.
Kaadrid siin all on tehtud siis, kui koju jõudsin. Selle aja peale oli vaatemäng juba kahvatumas.

Halos on snow surface

22° halo and parhelias on snow.

22° halo ja päikesekoerad lume pinnal.

It was all plate crystals - millions of them, lying on top of each other.

Ainult kuusnurksed plaadikujulised jääkristallid - milljoneid, kõik üksteise kukil.

Later I went back and got a nice moon display. I was lucky, after that shot the clouds approached and that was it. I managed to shoot three shots of total - not enough for stacking. A single frame below.

Hiljem läksin tagasi ja sain nõrga kuuhalo jääpinnal. Peale kolme kaadrit tekkisid pilved ja see oli kõik selleks päevaks.

Moon halo

09.12.2008

Almost a month since the last update. Halos have become really rare in the end of this year. I count only 7 observation days from November to 11th December and none of them have been noteworthy. The reason is the weather conditions, such as the low-altitude snow and rainclouds. Some weeks has passed without no sunlight at all...lets hope all this to change in the next year.

Peaaegu üks kuu on möödunud viimasest blogiuuendusest. Statistika näitab, et halod on muutunud tõelisteks haruldusteks viimasel ajal. Novembrist kuni 11nda Detsembrini panin kirja ainult 7 vaatluse päeva ja mitte ükski neist pole olnud märkimisväärne. Põhjus - madalalt liuglevad lume ja vihmapilved. Mõni nädal on möödunud üldse ilma päikesevalguseta...loodame, et kõik see muutub järgmisel aastal.

Exciting new halo forms from Rovaniemi

November and December - the best time in year to travel Rovaniemi where the snow machines are in constant run generating the nuclei that helps to form the diamond dust.

6th November '08 - A new halo seen and photographed by Marko Riikonen. A new arc generated quite an excitement and discussion among the halo experts. Later the new halo explained by Walter Tape as the reflected lower sunvex Parry arc.
You can read more about it from ICH site - here and here. A detailed explanation is available on Atmospheric Optics.

7th December '08 - even more new halos by Marko Riikonen! In this time the new subhorizon halos: sub-120° parhelion, sub-Kern and subcircumnadiral arc formed by plate crystals. Also take a look on ICH site where Marko riikonen presenting the anthelion view of this display.
